Design Award Adventure In Taiwan
We arrived in stormy Taipei on Tuesday, 17 September—not for leisure or to seek out the country’s best street food, but to prepare for the final selection of the Golden Pin Design Award at the Xinyi District in Taipei. Our Naughton Coffee Table and Castella Modular Sofa had been shortlisted for the final round of this prestigious award.
We had checked in all of our Starchie Home products with us on the plane trip, so you can imagine how mobile the furniture can be!
When we got to the exhibition hall, it was buzzing with all the finalists setting up. There were plenty of innovative and beautiful designs on display, and we had the great opportunity to view and experience them first-hand.
You can never expect a smooth setup when it comes to big events, and this time was no different. We had to find a hardware store to get some tools, but also found some time to enjoy ourselves— along the way, we got ourselves some authentic Taiwanese bubble milk tea.
We also met a fellow Singaporean finalist, Jessica from Rehyphen, who showed us her work, in which she weaves products out of cassette tapes.
Finally, our hard work paid off, and we were all set for the final round of judging—then came a few anxious days of waiting for news.
On Friday, 20 September, we were thrilled to find out that the Naughton Coffee Table had won a Golden Pin Design Mark Award, and would be displayed in the Golden Pin Design Award Exhibition. We’d like to say a big thank you to our collaborator Studionorm in Singapore for working with us on the Naughton!
Kudos as well to Fraction Design (founded by our very own designer Celine!), for being awarded the Golden Pin Design Mark for their Overlay Tables!
Being a part of the Golden Pin award selection, and seeing all the designs and designers from all around the world coming together, also reminded us of why we do what we’re doing, and spurred us to continue pushing forward. We hope that this is the first of more to come.
